The Education Department works in two general areas: local public education and scholarship opportunities for women.

For 2011-2012, NMW Club has "adopted" Blythe Elementary as a main public education focus. Thus far, member volunteers have participated at the school's Book Fair, tutored students, and greeted parents during open house presentations for the magnet school lottery program. Several members have completed orientation to prepare them to be mentors during the school's Lunch Buddy program. We look forward to another Book Fair and activities in the spring.

In September the department asked members to fulfill a request from Hough High School to once again acquire supplies for the health room, and our members were very generous. From bandages to rubbing alcohol and other first aid supplies, our members provided.

Helping children during difficult economic times has been a focus for NMWC, and when Bailey Middle School requested financial help for those students who could not finance a school trip to the Outer Banks, our members gave. Thanks to NMWC those 8th graders that could not afford to make the trip and will participate in studies that cover science, math, and history.

Scholarship opportunities for women in the community have been a major focus for North Mecklenburg Women's Club for many years. Through effective fundraising and publicity by our members, our club presents financial aid for women who are enrolled in accredited educational institutions. This year, our February fundraiser will finance those scholarships that will be presented in the spring. Those women who seek financial assistance for education may download an application on this web site. The Education Department selects the recipients in April. Our most recent recipient is Kim Miller from Huntersville.
